BYU | BRIGHAM YOUNG UNIVERSITY
College of Health & Human Performance

Mission

The mission of the College of Health and Human Performance is to contribute to the total development of students and faculty by helping them to reach their fullest potential--spiritually, intellectually, socially and physically. To accomplish this, we must provide a positive and challenging environment that emphasizes the achievement of excellence according to one's aptitudes in the various areas of human development. Of fundamental importance is the development of moral excellence. All activities in the college should contribute to the building of faith in Christ and the acquisition of the moral virtues embraced by the Gospel of Jesus Christ. The College will provide a foundation for continuous learning that prepares individuals to serve their professions effectively, meet personal challenges, care for their families and serve as responsible citizens. Under these guiding concepts, the specific goals of the College are these:
  1. To help students obtain the knowledge, skills, and motivation necessary to maintain a healthy lifestyle and to improve their neuromuscular skills in sport, dance, or fitness activities.
  2. To contribute to the health and well being of members of the University community by providing the opportunity to engage in sport, dance, and fitness activities through intramural, extramural, and free time programs.
  3. To provide professional preparation programs in selected areas of emphasis in health, physical education, recreation and dance, with the understanding that excellence must be achieved in those areas in which professional preparation is offered.
  4. To produce quality scholarship, research and creative works in selected areas of specialization in our various disciplines. Such works should involve both faculty and students, and should emphasize cooperative efforts between these groups.
  5. To sponsor outstanding performing groups in dance and intercollegiate athletic teams that favorably promote the University and the Church among alumni, Church members, and others in this country and throughout the world.
